Subterranea Britannica

Come and join the only UK wide society dedicated to underground spaces, man-made and man-used in London Saturday April 23rd for the 2022 Spring meeting and Subbrit AGM. This is the first day meeting we will be having at the Canada Water Theatre and will be a great opportunity to meet up and listen to talks on all kinds of underground topics.

Sub Brit's AGM will start the meeting at 10:00, lasting approximately half an hour and will be followed by the Spring Meeting. This will include the usual mix of interesting, illustrated talks along with Members' contributions and a chance to meet and mingle with fellow enthusiasts.

Speakers currently lined up are:

  • Emily Glass, who will talk about Albania's Mushroom-Shaped Bunkers and how they were perceived in the Communist and Post-Communist eras.

  • Robert Stephenson from Kensal Green and Brompton Cemeteries. "The horror of premature burial". Premature burial has unquestionably happened in the past and there are some recent cases of people being saved from the brink. Who can contemplate this ultimate of horrors without being chilled to the marrow?

  • Sarah Smart – Creating the first burial barrow for 2000 years. Why and how the Barrow was built and the challenges faced.

Any changes to the line-up will be advised via the website and the Programme will be published on the website nearer the time.

The Venue: this is a new venue for Sub Brit, although we have held Committee meetings here. The meeting will be in Canada Water Theatre, which is within the Canada Water Library building. This is two minutes walk from Canada Water tube station on the Jubilee Line (4 stops from Waterloo) and on London Overground.

Note: Every effort will be made to hold the meeting at this venue; however, if Covid-19 restrictions are in place at the time, it may be necessary to change the arrangements. This will be advised by email to all members and people who have booked.
