In the Dark Webinar - Sandford Hill

Tonights talk:

SubBrit is pleased to announce the fifth - In The Dark Webcast.

Starring – Ed Waters

Title - Discovery and Rediscovery in the Caves and Mines of Sandford Hill

Date – 09 July 2020

Time - 1830

Registration – https://www.bigmarker.com/subbrit/in-the-dark-discovery-and-rediscovery-in-the-caves-and-mines-of-sandford-hill 12

Sub Brit and Mendip Caving Group member Ed Waters will describe the efforts to explore the interconnected lead mines and natural caves of Sandford Hill which lies within the Mendip Hills of Somerset. The Webinar will cover over 15 years of tough exploration, including digging out fill from narrow passages and an 80ft (24m) shaft. These efforts have led to the discovery of extensive previously unrecorded mine workings and caves not seen since the miners were last here in the 18th Century. Given the lack of written records, such exploration is the only way to study these mines and a great deal of knowledge has been gained by this work. However, we have still to shed light on a 19th Century legend or to realise the hoped for “through trip” from the top to the bottom of the hill, though it is tantalisingly close.

Coronavirus Catchup

As all exploring and visits are cancelled at the moment, Tunnel Inspecting HQ has been quiet.

Cancelled (just for TI and Mrs TI, plenty of other underground events have also been stopped) since the beginning of lockdown here in the UK:
  • The SubBrit Spring conference,
  • visits to:
  • Abbey Wood pumping Station,
  • Alderley Edge mines,
  • London,
  • Dover Castle Dumpy level,
  • Derbyshire showcaves,
  • Belfast and Portadown ROC post,
Lots of work going on on-line though, with Webinars for SubBrit, virtual VE day70 events as well as work on a local project recording War Graves in Stockport Cemetery, as it is within allowed exercise distance and everyone there is already six feet away from you!
The hope is also to catch up on the huge backlog for photos waiting to be uploaded, dating back to Berlin 2019.
Watch this space!
Keep safe everyone

Subbrit spring meeting and AGM 2020

Im booked as host for the day as usual, and we have a fantastic group of speakers arranged - get your tickets now!

Booking for Sub Brit's Spring Meeting on Saturday 25 April is now open.

We have a new venue this year at the London Metropolitan University in Holloway Road (N7 8DB).
Phil Catling has arranged four fascinating speakers:
  • Robert Stephenson on 'The Horror of Premature Burial'
  • Wesley Perriman talking on Nuclear Testing on Christmas Island
  • Emily Glass on the Bunkers of Albania
  • Prof Neil Hyatt on the construction of repositories for Nuclear Waste.
There will also be slots for members' contributions and our AGM will precede the speaker programme.

The cost is £25 to include a buffet lunch. Refreshments from 0930, meeting starts at 1000. Non members are very welcome to attend.

In addition, Tony Radstone has arranged a Sub Brit tour on the following today (Sunday 26 April) to Crossness Pumping Station (SE2 9AQ). This should make the trip more worthwhile for members who live some distance from London. Crossness is known as the 'Cathedral of Sewage' and is a hugely impressive Grade 1 listed structure at the terminus of Bazalgette's Southern Outfall Sewer. The visit is an option for members only and costs an additional £15.
Please address any questions to meetings@subbrit.org.uk

Non - members book here: eventbrite, subbrit
